Avoid These Common RC Car and Truck Mistakes

There’s good reason that the cheapest and lowest-quality simple RC vehicles are referred to as “toy grade” and why those of better quality, sought out by committed operators are “hobby grade.” Committing to a hobby-grade RC trophy truck, RC racing buggy, or any other radio control vehicle, if you’re serious about keeping it running and ready, is a hobby. And like so many other hobbies, what you get out of owning and operating RC vehicles is directly proportional to what you put into it.

Hobbies require a consistent commitment of time, energy, concentration, research, and resources. While that may sound intimidating, for most RC hobbyists, all of that is the point. When just starting off or buying a new vehicle, part of the hobby is finding the right vehicle, learning about it, building or upgrading it, maintaining it, and, of course, running it. However, when a feature of that hobby is overlooked, neglected, poorly researched, or ignored, the vehicle and the hobbyist both suffer. The following outline a few tips to avoid falling into that trap.

Eyes Bigger Than Your Stomach

As exciting as the prospect of purchasing your first or ninth RC car or truck can be, be honest about your likely interest level and the time you have to commit to your hobby. Also consider what’s actually important to you when it comes to the vehicle’s performance, and where you’ll be using it. Being seduced by one of those magnificent 4x4 RC trail trucks is understandable. But if you’re not going to have time to build it from the ground up, paint the body, or maintain it and have no idea where you’d take it off-roading, it might not be the right choice for you at this time.

Not Reading the Manual

It might sound like an obvious tip, but it bears repeating: Read your RC vehicle’s manual. This really is an entirely necessary part of the process. If you don’t,you’re simply not setting yourself up for success and are likely to overlook something. Reading the manual is crucial to make sure you don’t miss an important step that could impact the life and performance of your vehicle. Read through any accompanying paperwork, and if any of it doesn’t make sense, do some research on it and reach out to the vendor for support as needed.

Battery Mistakes

Battery issues virtually all have to do with two common charging-based mistakes. The first of those is not charging your battery pack fully before its first use. It can be very tempting to have your RC vehicle tearing around the yard as soon as it’s out of the box. But doing so without charging the pretty much inevitably half-full(if that) battery is going to be counterproductive. Always give it a charge out of the box. The second issue is far more dangerous: Never charge your battery unattended. Don’t charge it while you sleep or while you’re out as overcharged batteries can start fires. And only use high-quality batteries and chargers that are approved or recommended by the manufacturer.
